Menegakis Sifis

“You can find superior olives elsewhere too, but if the mill isn’t as modern, as clean, or as well run as ours, you won’t get olive oil that’s as clear, without residues, without defects.”

Sifis Menegakis is both an olive farmer from a family that has owned olive trees as far back as they can remember, and the accredited engineer who runs Terra Creta’s mill machines. He was one of the first employees at the company’s modern facility in Kolymvari, which opened in 2009. He took over his family’s olive groves in 2007, inheriting 500 Koroneiki trees from his father and planting another 100 young olive saplings himself. He has happy memories of that process of planting trees to create his own new olive grove--a place he loves to visit.

When he was about six years old, Sifis and other children played with the sacks used to gather olives after they were harvested from his family olive orchard. When he first took his own olives to the mill to make his own olive oil in 2008, anxious to see how much oil his fruit would yield, he experienced a new sense of exhilaration. With this local product so nutritious and abundant in Crete, Sifis sees no reason to use any other type of oil in his own food.

Quotation to highlight: “You can find superior olives elsewhere too, but if the mill isn’t as modern, as clean, or as well run as ours, you won’t get olive oil that’s as clear, without residues, without defects.”
